Novelist BIOGRAPHY - Long version
Novelist is a highly renowned musician who hails from Lewisham, South-East London. His perceptive approach to all aspects of artistry began at the age of six, using a variety of tools to craft his early compositions. Since then, he’s received remarkable acclaim for his output, and is now fully established as a creative force to be reckoned with.
Notable projects to date include his instrumental EP Sniper from 2014 – described as ‘high octane’ by Resident Advisor – his collaboration with XL Records and Mumdance on ‘Take Time’ and ‘1 Sec’, notwithstanding multiple headline shows with Red Bull in the summer of 2015. He’s not someone who dwells on past achievements, however, and is fully focused upon fresh and exciting endeavours.
Through this consistent innovation, Novelist has developed a new approach to music with his Ruff Sound Movement. Acting as a sonic reflection of his surroundings, this exhilarating musical format adopts a faster pace than grime instrumentation, whilst eliciting vocal styles reminiscent of ragga or jungle: all without losing its idiosyncratic edge. The movement has already begun a legacy, and tracks such as ‘Hoax’ and ‘Eye for an Eye Riddim’ act as defining moments in its nascent, yet altogether masterful canon of works. Other advocates of the sound include his DJ Grandmixxer, DJ Kay C and Ezro from Vision Crew, to name a few.
His revelatory approach to aesthetics in general has seen him collaborate across the artistic spectrum, branching out into visual and the applied arts, most notably making waves within the fashion industry. Novelist has had a profound understanding of fashion’s importance from a young age, and his work with distinguished designer Joyrich is a testament to his knowledge of the field. The Los Angeles-based outfit worked closely with Novelist in presenting a unique Spring-Summer ’17 collection that deftly incorporates elements of work-wear with a strong awareness of street functionality. This first-hand experience will directly feed into further projects seeing Novelist continue to manufacture striking products that will set trends, in a similar manner to his pioneering musical work.
With such potency and presence in the wider public eye, Novelist also feels a necessity incumbent upon himself to articulate powerful messages through his output: from adopting a politically active stance on tracks such as ‘Street Politician’ and ‘Tax the MPs’ to authoring compelling tales of everyday life in the borough as part of his ‘Block Freestyle’ series. He likens this intent to the rallying cry of the punk movement: “it’s the same kind of thing now, but with a different culture. I’m obliged to almost say what the truth is because influence can change someone’s life. Someone who is not in the same predicament as me might reconsider scenarios having listened to my music; I’ve got a wide-ranging fan base, and I like to allow people to understand that I’m politically aware and stand for something”.
Indeed, the themes in his music have brought a positively global audience to his music, with his shrewd observations, breath-taking energy and spectacular soundscapes. He’s been featured in The New Yorker, toured extensively around the world, and won over countless crowds with his dynamic live show.
With the launch of his new label Mmm Yeh Records, he intends to further this reach in a truly organic way. By drawing upon one of his classic slogans, he envisions a far deeper meaning for the brand. Owing to the phrase itself indicating an act of approval, he is setting out to subliminally orchestrate a radical impact upon our cultural landscape. This will be achieved through curating an interdisciplinary cornucopia of artwork, music and haute couture.
Novelist cuts a decidedly distinctive figure in today’s world, otherwise filled with industry pawns and copyists. Never one to replicate, his continual push towards new ideas and practice resolutely cements his position as both a luminary mind and leading light; paving the way for an entire generation of artists set to follow in his footsteps.
